Through this conservation campaign, more than 60 sea lions have been saved, thanks to a collaborative effort between individuals and institutions. The focus of the campaign is on "disentanglement"—a process in which sea lions trapped in fishing gear or marine debris are rescued. When these non-target species get caught in nets or trash, it often leaves harmful debris wrapped around their bodies. The combined efforts of these organizations are essential in aiding these sentinels of the sea.

A RESCUE JOURNEY BEGINS IN LA PAZ

The conservation mission starts in La Paz, Baja California Sur, where a highly skilled team of veterinarians from Cabo Dolphins (Cabo Adventures) and Dolphin Adventure (Vallarta Adventures) join forces with members of Wildlife Mexico Rescue Center. Collaborating with experts from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) Espíritu Santo, they embark on a challenging journey. Covering over 1,114 kilometers, this team heads to remote locations, fully prepared to take on the unique challenges involved in saving these majestic sea lions.

After a 17-hour expedition, the team is warmly greeted by representatives of CONANP at the Gulf Islands in Bahía de los Ángeles and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) in Baja California. This partnership brings together the knowledge and specialized equipment necessary to successfully free sea lions entangled in various types of fishing gear.

SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT AND A MISSION OF HOPE

The rescue missions rely on advanced equipment, including remote sedation tools, inhalation anesthesia machines, drones, and essential medical supplies for disentangling the sea lions. The team’s mission is simple: free as many sea lions as possible from their entanglements.

Once a sea lion with entanglement is located and properly positioned, the team carefully administers sedatives. This moment is filled with adrenaline, hope, and precision. Drones monitor the sea lion throughout the sedation process to ensure its safety. Once relaxed, the sea lion is gently retrieved using special nets and transported to the medical station for further care.

LIFE-SAVING TREATMENT AND RETURN TO THE WILD

At the medical station, the sea lion undergoes anesthesia so the disentanglement process can begin. Medical samples are taken to assess its health, and the sea lion’s vital signs are continuously monitored throughout the procedure. The entire process is carefully overseen by PROFEPA to ensure all actions are conducted ethically and responsibly.

Once freed from the entanglement and fully recovered from sedation, the sea lion is safely returned to its natural habitat. This second chance at life allows these remarkable creatures to once again enjoy the beauty of their ocean home, free from suffering.
